HOW TO USE LUBE: A STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE
Lube is one of the simplest ways to make sex, foreplay and self-pleasure feel better. It isn't only for when something feels wrong. Think of it like a moisturiser: something you use because it makes things feel good. If you've never used it before, or you've only ever reached for it halfway through, this guide walks you through it step by step.

Before you start
- Patch test first. If you have sensitive skin, put a small amount on the inside of your wrist and wait 24 hours before using it intimately.
- Keep the bottle within reach. Put it on the bedside table before things get going, so you're not stopping to search for it.
- Check what it works with. Opal is safe with latex and polyisoprene condoms, and with silicone, glass and metal toys.
1. How much to use

Start with a pea-sized amount, about the size of a fingertip. Opal is silky and long-lasting, so a little goes a long way. You can always add more, and it's much easier than wiping some away. Use more for anal play and with toys, where there's no natural lubrication to help.
2. Warm it first

Lube straight from the bottle can feel cold. Rub it between your fingers or palms for a few seconds so it reaches body temperature before it touches skin.
3. Using lube in foreplay

Foreplay is where lube really comes into its own. Saliva dries quickly and needs topping up, but a good lubricant stays smooth, so you can stay in the moment.
- Start with massage. A little lube on the hands makes a back, thigh or shoulder massage glide, and slows things down in a good way.
- Hand jobs. Warm a generous amount in your palm, then wrap your hand around the penis and use long, slow strokes from base to tip. Vary your grip and pace, try a gentle twist of the wrist at the top, and use your other hand on the shaft, testicles or perineum. Add a little more whenever the glide starts to drag. Because Opal is silicone, it stays slippery for much longer than saliva or water-based lube, so you're not constantly stopping to reapply.
- Fingering and clitoral touch. Begin on the outside, with lubricated fingertips circling the clitoris and stroking along the labia, before slowly sliding a finger inside. Let your partner guide the pressure and speed. Keep nails short and smooth.
- Don't forget the rest of the body. Inner thighs, nipples and the perineum are all sensitive, and a light, slippery touch there builds anticipation.
- Mutual touch. Use lube on both of you at the same time, side by side or face to face. Slippery hands make it easier to keep a rhythm going together.
- Self-pleasure. Lube makes solo touch more comfortable and helps you learn what you enjoy, which you can then share with a partner.
- Talk about it. Ask what feels good, show each other, and pass the bottle. Bringing lube in together makes it part of the experience rather than an interruption.
- Before penetration, reapply. Add a fresh amount to both bodies, or to fingers or a toy, just before penetration.
4. During sex
Lube can wear off with time and movement. If things start to feel less comfortable, pause and add a little more. Topping up is normal and part of using lube well, not a sign anything is wrong.
5. Using lube with condoms

Lube helps condoms work better, because less friction means less chance of a condom tearing.
- Put the condom on first.
- Then apply lube to the outside of the condom.
- Never put lube inside the condom, as it can make it slip off.
- Avoid oil-based products, such as coconut oil or body lotion, with latex condoms, because they weaken latex. Opal is safe with latex and polyisoprene condoms.
6. Using lube with toys
Apply a small amount directly to the toy, and a little to the body too. Add more as you go. Opal works with silicone, glass and metal toys. Clean toys before and after use.
7. Anal play
The anus doesn't produce its own lubrication, so lube is essential here. Use more than you would elsewhere, reapply often, and go slowly. If anything hurts, stop.
8. In the shower or bath
Opal is waterproof, so it won't rinse away in water. Just remember it makes surfaces slippery, so take care on shower floors and in the bath.
9. Cleaning up

Silicone lubricant doesn't wash off with water alone. Use warm water and a mild soap on skin and toys. If any gets on sheets, a little washing-up liquid on the spot before washing will lift it out.
Storing your lube
Keep the cap closed and store the bottle somewhere cool and dry, away from direct sunlight. Use within 24 months of opening.
A note on comfort
Lube should make things feel better. If you notice irritation that doesn't settle, stop using it, and if it continues, speak to your GP or a pharmacist.
